The kids and I decided to venture to Modena today to a comic book / fantasy game (i.e. Dungeons and Dragons) / geek paradise because Alex has developed interest in a card game called ‘Magic’. He found the name of the comic book store in a magazine, and given that our own small town is not a good source for the coveted cards required for the game, he asked if I would take him to Modena. Getting out of the house and doing something a little different sounded like a good idea, so we decided to make a day of it.
Lo and behold, we found the shop, bought some Magic cards, and then stumbled right into the middle of Modena’s “Festival Internazionale Bande Militari” (International Military Band Festival) also known as a ‘tattoo’.
There were bands from Italy:
Little known fact: the headwear of Italian soldiers is made from their own plucked eyebrows.
Great Britain:
Bulgaria:
Ukraine:
Bing Crosby is apparently alive and well and living in Kiev.
And my personal favorites, Turkey!!
We wrapped up our international adventure by having some Chinese food, and then we took the train back home. Good day!

Wow! The Band of Ukrainian Bus Drivers, I had heard of them of course, who hasn’t? But I had never expected to see even a picture of them. I had started to think that perhaps they were just a legend. Awesome!

Joni, I think you are being a little bit unfair regarding the Italian eyebrow plucking.
There is a very serious military purpose to that. Suppose all that luxuriant growth started to impede vision? They wouldn’t be able to see which direction to surrender in would they?

Hello Joni. Enjoying your blog and photos. A few comments. 1) carter my 12 year-older loves the on-line game runescape.com. its kinda like a medieval game that he and his friends are enjoying.
2) Also, when it comes to home decorating & couch covering — my two favorite tools in addition to a glue gun are a staple gun and spray paint. The staple gun has come in so handy — from school projects to recovering stools. And its my OWN — i thought of it and bought it myself. Spray paint is awesome for all kind of things.
Take care and we’re thinking of you still — Jennifer and all

Dear Jennifer,
Thank you for checking in! The staple gun in particular is a really excellent idea. The couches I was given are awful, and I have no real sartorial skills, but stapling the fabric on might just work!
I’ll tell Alex about Runescape and see what he thinks.
Thanks!
love,
Joni

You know joni, i am rapidly developing a crush on Lia. This picture is so captivating. Together with the zen picture in the hospital, she has quite charmed me. When she is old enough to travel and needs to get away from mom, I know the list is long and ABQ might be down a ways, but i would love to get to know her (how’s that for a sentence?).
