Spain misses and the Italians cheer

The locals gathered in the piazza to watch the Italy vs. Spain match on a big screen.  It came down to taking kicks to determine the winner.

In the photo above, Spain has just missed a shot.  It was the last happy moment for the Italian fans, as the Spaniards made every remaining shot, and the Italians didn’t.

Can you spot Alex?  How about the monk?

Trying to capture celebrants

Apart from Alex’s games, I can’t claim to be much of a fan of calcio, but when the home team wins and people pour into the street to celebrate, I have to admit that I get caught up in the excitement.  Last night there was apparently an important game in the EuroCup, and shortly before midnight we heard the distinct sounds of victory as people outside began to shout, driving up and down the otherwise deserted streets, honking horns and waving flags.

“What’s that all about?” I asked Alex.  “Dunno,” he said, and then remembered that Turkey was playing against Croatia.  “Apparently,” he said, “there are a lot of either Turks or Croatians in the neighborhood.”

We went out onto the terrace, and soon a carload of shouting fans drove past, a Turkish flag flying victoriously.

My attempts at capturing this event with a photograph failed from a journalistic point of view, but I think the resulting Rorschachian ‘what do you see?’ picture is pretty cool anyway.
